Last verified: 5 October 2026 · Entry: September 2027
If you are in SS3 or your final year of SHS right now, this is the most valuable scholarship you can apply for this month, and the first deadline is Friday 9 October 2026. That date is not yours. It belongs to your school.
The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship pays for four full years at the University of Toronto: tuition, books, incidental fees and residence. About 37 students in the world win it each year. You cannot apply on your own. Your school has to nominate you first, and each school can nominate only one student. So the real race this week is inside your own school, and some students miss out simply because nobody told the principal in time.
Below, I explain who qualifies, the three deadlines, how to get your school to nominate you (even if it has never done so before), how to apply to U of T from Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia or The Gambia, and the rule about AI that can get you disqualified. Every detail comes from the University of Toronto’s own website.

Scam alertThe University of Toronto says the Pearson program does not work with agencies or “agents”, and that recipients can only be nominated by their own secondary school through the university’s online process. Anyone who offers to “process” a Pearson Scholarship for a fee is not connected to the university.
In this guide
What the Pearson Scholarship covers
According to the University of Toronto, the scholarship covers:
- Tuition for four years
- Books
- Incidental fees
- Full residence support for four years
It is the university’s most prestigious award for international students. It is valid only at the University of Toronto, only for a first undergraduate degree, and only in your top-choice program at the time scholarship decisions are made. The university names about 37 Pearson Scholars each year.
The official page does not list flights, visa or study permit fees, or health insurance among the costs covered. Plan for those separately, and confirm with the university if you are selected.

The three deadlines
There are three separate deadlines, and you must meet all of them. In October, Toronto is five hours behind Nigeria and four hours behind Ghana.
| Step | Who does it | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| School nominates you (schools already in the program) | Your principal or counsellor | 9 October 2026 |
| School applies to join the program (schools that have never taken part) | Your principal or counsellor | 9 October 2026, 12 noon Toronto time |
| Apply for admission to U of T | You | 16 October 2026 |
| Pearson Scholarship application and all documents | You | 6 November 2026 |
Noon in Toronto on 9 October is about 5:00 pm in Lagos and 4:00 pm in Accra, Freetown, Monrovia and Banjul. Do not aim for the last hour.
Who can apply
You must meet all three conditions the university lists:
- You are an international student, meaning you are not Canadian and you will need a study permit.
- You are in your final year of senior secondary school in 2026/2027, or you graduated no earlier than June 2026.
- You will start at the University of Toronto in September 2027.
You are not eligible if you have already started any post-secondary studies (university, polytechnic, college of education and so on), or if you plan to start post-secondary studies in January 2027 at U of T or anywhere else.
In West African terms: if you are in SS3 in Nigeria, final-year SHS in Ghana, or the final year of senior secondary school in Sierra Leone, Liberia or The Gambia this session, or you finished in June 2026 or later and have not started university, you are in the right window. If you finished school in 2025 or earlier, this round is not for you. If you are already in 100 level at a Nigerian university, it is not for you either.
Step 1: Get your school to nominate you
This step decides everything, and it is the one with the closest deadline. Here is how it works, based on the university’s guidance for schools:
- If your school has taken part before, it is already verified. Verified schools received a private nomination form by email from 6 July 2026. Your principal or guidance counsellor fills it in by 9 October 2026.
- If your school has never taken part, it must first apply to join the program using the university’s school participation form, by 12 noon Toronto time on 9 October 2026. The university verifies the school and then sends the nomination form and next steps.
- One student per school, per year. The university expects the school to choose its strongest candidate.
- Your school can nominate you even before you apply to U of T, but you cannot submit the scholarship application until you have applied for admission.
What to do today:
- Go to your principal, vice principal (academics) or guidance counsellor and ask one question: “Is our school registered for the University of Toronto Lester B. Pearson Scholarship, and have we nominated anyone this year?”
- If the school is registered, ask to be considered and give them a one-page summary: your results so far, your leadership roles, your community projects and what you want to study.
- If the school is not registered, show them the official Pearson Scholarship page and the participation form. Only the school can submit it. You cannot do it on their behalf.
- Ask the school to confirm in writing (an email is fine) once your nomination has been submitted.
Step 2: Apply to the University of Toronto by 16 October
To be considered for Pearson, you must apply for admission to at least one undergraduate program at U of T, starting in September 2027. The deadline for Pearson candidates is 16 October 2026. That is much earlier than the university’s normal application dates, so do not be misled by the later deadlines you will see on other pages.
All applications go through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC). U of T explains which form to use on its applications page:
- University of Toronto International Application: for students who live outside Canada, are not studying and have never studied in Canada, and are not applying to any other Ontario university. The fee is CAD $196, and it is not refundable.
- OUAC Undergraduate Application: use this instead if you also want to apply to other universities in Ontario.
Submit only one of these. If you submit both, U of T cancels the second one and does not refund it.
Other points from the university’s how to apply page:
- The first form asks only for basic details and your program choices. No transcripts at this stage.
- You can choose up to three program areas (for example, one each at different faculties or campuses). If you win Pearson, it applies only to your top choice at decision time, so put the program you most want first.
- About a week after U of T receives your application, you get an email with your JOINid and instructions for the Join U of T applicant portal, where you upload documents and track your application.
- Use a personal email address you check every day. U of T communicates mainly by email.
Step 3: Complete the Pearson application by 6 November
Once your school has nominated you, the university sends you a private link to the Pearson Scholarship application. You can only complete it after you have applied for admission to U of T. The deadline to finish the scholarship application and submit all required documents is 6 November 2026.
The application questions are only visible through that private link, so I will not guess at them here. Read every question carefully when you receive it and give yourself at least two weeks to draft, rewrite and check your answers.
WAEC, English and documents
Academic requirement
On its requirements by country page, U of T lists the West African Examinations Council Senior School Certificate Examination as the minimum admission qualification for Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia. Engineering has its own requirements, and each program may have prerequisite subjects, so check the page for the program you choose. Admission to U of T is competitive, and Pearson nominees are expected to be among the very best students in their schools.
Because you apply before you sit WASSCE, you will submit the senior secondary results you have so far. After you apply, the Join U of T portal will tell you exactly which transcripts and forms to send.
English language
U of T’s English language requirements say you need proof of English if English is not the first language you learned at home, unless you qualify for an exemption. One exemption is four or more years of full-time study in an English-language school in a country where English is the dominant language. If you think you qualify, you request the exemption through the Join U of T portal after you apply.
If you need a test, the university accepts, among others, IELTS Academic (overall 6.5, no band below 6.0) and the Duolingo English Test (overall 120 with 120 in Production). All applicants must also present a senior-level English course.
Documents
U of T’s required documents page says you must provide transcripts for all secondary studies you have attempted. Depending on your background, you may also need a self-reported grades form, proof of English and other documents the portal lists. Uploaded copies can be used for a provisional decision, but official transcripts sent directly by your school are required before an offer is final. Do not mail original certificates. U of T keeps whatever you send.
The AI rule that can disqualify you
This one is important. The University of Toronto states that using generative AI tools such as ChatGPT to create content for any U of T undergraduate award application is prohibited, and that nominees found to have done so will be disqualified.
So write every answer yourself, in your own words. Ask a teacher or parent to read your drafts and tell you where your story is unclear, but the words have to be yours. Do not copy sample essays from websites, including this one.
What the selectors look for
The university describes Pearson Scholars as students with exceptional academic achievement, creativity and leadership potential, who can contribute to the global community. In practice, that means your school should nominate, and you should present, evidence of three things:
- Top results: you are at or near the top of your class in the subjects linked to your chosen program.
- Leadership: a role where you changed something, not just a title. Head prefect is good; head prefect who organised a reading club that ran for a full term is better.
- Creativity and impact: something you started or built. A science project, a small business, a community clean-up, a school magazine, a coding club.
Write down the details now, with dates and numbers: how many students, how much money raised, how long it ran. Specific facts are what make a nomination and an application believable.
What happens after you apply
- U of T releases admission decisions in rounds between January and May.
- For last year’s round, the university said Pearson recipients would be notified from the end of January and all nominees by April. Expect a similar timeline this year, and watch your email, including the spam folder.
- If you plan to live on campus, the general residence application deadline is 31 March.
Check eligibility and apply only on the University of Toronto’s own websites.
